深秋
Late Autumn
Amid the bustle and the din
I give myself leave to be still —
to sit in the dappled light of a late-autumn tree
and let my thoughts roam where they will.
I watch the leaves, one by one,
trembling to fall though there is no wind,
and count up all their green of spring and summer.
I watch a tree
slowly chew on its flourishing and its fading,
until it stands there, become a landscape.
Tracing the veins of the seasons,
I find myself drafting a play in my head —
watching myself walk on into deep winter.
深冬
Deep Winter
To wake in the morning
and still be able
to potter slowly through every room;
still to have the heart
to set my wisp-light white hair
in the style he likes;
still, after breakfast, to wait
for the cup of coffee he makes me, curling with steam,
and watch him drop dried tangerine peel, rosebuds and such
into the pot to steep.

Knowing that love has been here all along,
with no need to prove it hour by hour —
and yet, half teasing, I might say:
“My dear, I love you,”
and be so moved by my own words
that these old eyes, dry and dim,
brim over with pearls of tears.
How warm it is in the house.
Outside,
light snowflakes waltz toward the window lattice.
We hold each other’s hands.
And if we are to remember,
let us just talk about
the things that once were —
the lovely things,
the days that made us happy.
